LOCATION

Your home could play an important part in your retirement plans. We suggest that LOCATION, SECURITY, SAFETY and COMFORT are areas that should be investigated dependent on your individual circumstances.

A move at retirement can be considered for various reasons, as outlined below. We suggest you seriously consider all the implications and thoroughly research the subject before coming to a decision. If property is involved and you get the move wrong it could prove a costly mistake and expensive to resolve.

Suggestion – why not rent a place in the new area and have a trial stay before deciding on move.

The common reasons for moving are:

  • House too large.
  • Sale will release capital.
  • To be near family/friends.

Location

  • Change of area.
  • Change of country – (We strongly recommend a visit to www.fopdac.com - the website of the Federation of Overseas Property Developers, Agents and Consultants to locate UK agents).
To help you reach a decision we are outlining some of the Pros and Cons to look at, your own circumstances will dictate those that are relevant.

Pros.

  • The choice and freedom of a new lifestyle.
  • Away from the imposed work location.
  • Release of capital to enhance your retirement financial situation.
  • Less time spent on household maintenance and household duties.
  • More time for family/friends.
  • Living in safer/secure surroundings.
  • A warmer climate may help some health problems.
  • Opportunity to make new friends – take up new hobbies and interests.

Cons.

  • Downgrading to a smaller place could mean parting with personal/household possessions.
  • Can you cope with less space, including personal space?
  • Will you have room for visiting children/grandchildren etc?
  • A move to be near family/friends – could they also move in future?
  • If moving from your existing area, will you miss family/friends/neighbours, and their support?
  • Are there good shopping facilities – reliable public transport – suitable leisure provision?
  • What level of service is provided by the social and national health organisations?
  • House moves can be a traumatic experience.
  • Moving to another country - you will have to adhere to their legal systems for house purchase, inheritance, taxes etc.(see reference to website above).

DO YOUR HOMEWORK WELL AND GET IT RIGHT - GOOD LUCK !!
