COLDS COUGHS AND SNEEZES ON THE COSTA DEL SOL

BE PREPARED!

On a recent visit to this area my husband and I became ill and was directed by the resort staff to an English speaking Doctor. We were examined and given a prescription for medicines.

When the Doctor gave us her bill we produced our E111 forms and were then advised that she was in private practice and not part of the Spanish State Health Service. We had to pay her and also pay for the prescribed medicines. We were able to partly reclaim from our travel insurance but have learned a lesson – get details in advance from www.doh.gov.uk/traveladvice/eeachecklist.htm about how the system works in the country you intend to visit – this site of course only covers countries in the European Economic Area.

For advice on treatment in other parts of the world - www.doh.gov.uk/traveladvice/treatment.htm will provide guidance.

But remember it is advisable to also have adequate travel insurance.
